Electricity North West is a leading power network operator, delivering electricity to 5 million people across 2.4 million properties in the North West of England. The project involved designing and producing an engaging, 60+ page annual report that outlined the company’s financial performance, commitments, and responsibilities. The report aimed to communicate complex information in a visually compelling and accessible way.
To inject creativity into an otherwise data-heavy document, an illustrated paper cut-out world was introduced as a narrative device . The design featured rolling countryside landscapes, bustling urban cityscapes, and detailed elements such as wind turbines, electrical pylons, and buildings that represented various sectors, from residential to industrial. Trains, planes, and automobiles helped bring this illustrated world to life, guiding the reader through the annual report.
The paper cut-out world, alongside the strategic use of brand colours, fonts, and a clear typographical hierarchy, ensured the report remained engaging and cohesive throughout. Meanwhile, constraint, simplicity, and clarity were applied to the financial figures and tables, making them easy to read and understand. Creative direction, graphic design, and meticulous artwork combined to deliver a comprehensive, visually dynamic report. The paper cut-out world was so well-received that it was used for three consecutive years, evolving and expanding each time to enhance the narrative further.
